She died on June 14, 2021, at the age of 65 at Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital after she was struck by a scooter on June 4 as she was crossing Amsterdam Avenue near West 64th Street in Manhattan. Her death was confirmed by the New York Police Department.
The operator of the scooter had driven through a red light before crashing into Banes and then fled, according to Sgt. Edward Riley, a spokesman of the New York City Police Department. Banes lived in Los Angeles and had been in New York visiting friends, her wife, Kathryn Kranhold, told the New York Times.
“We are heartsick over Lisa’s tragic and senseless passing,” her manager David Williams told NBC News. “She was a woman of great spirit, kindness, and generosity and dedication to her work, whether on stage or in front of a camera and even more so to her wife, family, and friends. We were blessed to have had her in our lives.”
Since the accident, Banes had been in critical condition at Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital. “We have several days ahead of us to pray for Lisa,” her wife, Kathryn Kranhold said after the accident. “If anyone has any information about the scooter driver, we ask them to please call the police.”
